Great Falls in Virginia is a breath taking place
to visit!
The Park is located just off the Capital Beltway
(I-495). It is easy to find and about a 45 minute drive from
Southern Maryland and a 20 minute drive from the District of
Columbia.
The scenery is so beautiful
and rugged that it is hard to believe that you would find a place
like this so close to Washington DC.
There is a really great
Visitor Center that is a must see! The kids loved
the Learning Center there and
really wanted to stay longer coloring and touching fossils and
bones. We adults, loved the photos of the water shown so high
that it flowed over the entire top of the gorge and flooded the
road in to the Park several years ago.
There is a nice picnic
area just beyond the Entrance to the Park. The entrance fee is normally $4 per car, but is
waived on some holidays.
The hiking is nice. There are many paved
paths easily traveled by those needing to use
strollers.
The fenced
overlooks were terrific and gave the views
that you see here in the photos. We watched people in kayaks
navigating the Falls for quite a while. All the kids were
fascinated! Take binoculars to really enjoy
your visit.
Directions: From I-495 (outer loop)
travel west on SR 193 in the Vienna area, travel to Old Dominion
Drive. Go right in the Park. The Park's phone number is (703)
285-2966.
